July 09

El Hierro may be the smallest and southernmost of the Canary Islands, but it packs a big story geologically. Landslides have greatly shaped the island’s topography. El Golfo, the valley just inland from this coastal cave, was created from a sizeable landslide that happened roughly 15,000 years ago. Despite all this eco-drama, El Hierro maintains a population of around 10,000 and is part of the Canary Islands’ robust tourist industry.
